Teaching Responsibilities and professional development goals
Teaching Responsibilities
I teach two introductory biology courses and one environmental science course. I have 24 students in each class. They range in age from 17 to 60 years old. The biology course is a prereq for our Allied Heath programs. The environmental course is an elective. The biology has a lab component and the environmental is a lecture format. Many of my students have had experience in some science class but may not have done very well or they did not take biology for some reason. My class is diverse as far as age, race, and aptitude. This makes for a fun class because they bring in experiences that they are willing to share about the topics we study. It is also interesting because when we talk about historical events (like any science related event that happened in the 60’s or 70’s for instance) some of my students can add to what they remember and some were not born until the 80’s or early 90’s.
Professional Goals
My professional development goals are to continue with taking graduate level courses in biology and environmental science. I have always been interested in science and being able to teach what I have learned to others. My love to help others learn has led me to consider applying for a PhD program at the University of Wisconsin in the area of Urban Education. I have always been interested in education and.administration. I was thinking that if I ever became tired with teaching that I would want to use my skills to help other teachers at the level of administration.
