Personal and professional goals      
I attend as many of the on campus seminars and workshops pertaining to teaching and educational scholarship as I am aware of. These occur 2-3 times per semester and I have come away from each of them full of new ideas and methods to integrate into my courses.  I was privileged to receive a Center for Teaching Excellence Lilly Fellowship for the 2008-2009 academic year.  The CTE-Lilly Fellowship provides faculty from diverse disciplines the opportunity to spend a year interacting to address critical issues in teaching at the UMD. The focus of our conversations was on increasing academic rigor with controversial and complex problems which culminated in a group presented to the campus at a CTE seminar in September of 2009. On June 4-6 of 2009 the HPI teaching group held a Host-Pathogen Interaction Research and Teaching Workshop. The workshop was a three day forum for the informal exchange of ideas among faculty who research and teach Microbiology. The discussions and presentations focused on current research in host pathogen interactions occurring at UMD and how to integrate research into the teaching of microbiology. Following this workshop, I participated in the inaugural Chesapeake Project: Integrating Sustainability Across the Curriculum workshop conducted by the office of sustainability at UMD designed to help integrate sustainability across all academic disciplines.
This past fall I presented a poster at the American Society of Human Genetics annual conference titled “Integrating an Authentic Research Experience into an Undergraduate Recombinant DNA Technology Course” based on the curriculum I developed for the summer course I teach. In addition, I presented two posters on curriculum design at the 10th annual UMD Bioscience Research day in November.
