Capstone Pre-Assignment (Due July 7th) 

1) Click the "Attach File or Image" button at the bottom of this Wiki Capstone page (Note: you must be logged in). Upload the following information as one Word Document: 

  • An abstract of your journey since leaving the training Institute last summer (up to 300 words).  Include what has worked well; what has been a challenge, and what you still hope to accomplish as a Biology Scholar Alum; 
  • A table or a figure that helps to illustrate your past year’s work; and  
  • 1-3 references that have informed your past year’s work. 


Make sure the file name includes your last name as well as your residency name and year so that you can get credit for completing the assignment. 

2) Familiarize yourself with your institution’s mission statement and/or goals. Bring a hardcopy of this information to share at the Capstone.

Progress Over The Previous 12 Months: Sharing your progress aligning assessment, research designs and data, stumbling blocks, and future directions.–Cynthia DeBoy

Communicating Value and Convincing Colleagues About SoTL–Cynthia DeBoy 


In this session, Scholars will prepare an “elevator talk” about communicating value in SoTL; Scholars will align their response to their institutional goals. Scholars will present to the group for feedback.

Becoming a leader and publishing your work    - Samantha Elliott 

In this session, Scholars will hear from the Editor in Chief of JMBE about publication opportunities and considerations when planning to submit a manuscript. Scholars will also consider how they can use their own work to move towards leadership in SoTL in STEM education.

Opportunities beyond SoTL– Timothy Paustian  


In this session, Scholars will hear about how a journey into SoTL led to collaborations, presentations, a grant and publication opportunities. 

2:45 pm  

Leadership and Closure – 

In this session, Scholars will learn about becoming agents of change at their home institution, their new role as BSP ambassadors, and available resources for Biology Scholars Alumni. We would like to encourage a roundtable discussion with talking points about the future of STEM Education. This will also be an opportunity to network with existing Scholar Alumni to learn about their post-Residency experiences.

Hi all -- I'm looking forward to the Capstone in a few weeks! I'm on vacation until July 11th and unfortunately I can't access/post data by the July 7th deadline. I will update when I return! I'm looking forward to hearing about how everyone's projects have evolved. - Mandy

I'm not sure why, but I didn't receive an email about this assignment so I missed the deadline. I will try to get this done before we meet on Thursday. I thought it was odd that I hadn't heard anything about the capstone...
