There are two Research Ethics Boards at the University of Calgary that are responsible for managing the ethics review process as it pertains to research work in the institution. The Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board (CFREB) covers researchers in:

  • Arts
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Environmental Design
  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Haskayne School of Business
  • Institutes associated with any of these faculties:
    • Law
    • Science
    • Social Work

Each month the CFREB meets to provide full Board reviews on applications that identify more-than-minimal risk. Expedited Chair-only review occurs weekly for applications identified as minimal risk.

New in 2012 is the Tri-Councils' Course on Research Ethics (CORE) Tutorial. CFREB approval will require the completion of this course. Get certified on latest guidelines on ethical conduct for research involving humans before seeking your ethics approval.

Please review the documents below for insight into the process, answers to common questions and some tested advice.

2013 Submission Deadlines

The CFREB Board has a monthly full meeting. Research protocols which involve the use of deception or which pose a more-than-minimal risk to their participants (on those indicators provided in the application form itself) must, by Tri-Council Policy Statement regulation, come forward for full Board review.

NOTE: A Chair review determines which applications pose more-than-minimal risk. If risk is identified that was not indicated on the application it will be assigned a Board meeting date on the basis of time and agenda availability. Please contact the Ethics Resource Officers if you require support in determining risk as you prepare your application.

Following is a list of 2013 scheduled meetings dates together with the deadline for submission for each of these meetings.

 Meeting Date  Submission Deadline
Friday, January 25  Friday, January 11
Friday, February 22  Friday, February 8
Friday, March 29  Friday, March 15
Friday, April 26  Friday, April 12
Friday, May 31  Friday, May 17
Friday, June 28  Friday, June 15
Friday, July 26  Friday, July 12
Friday, August 30  Friday, August 16
Friday, September 27  Friday, September 13
Friday, October 25  Friday, October 11
Friday, November 29  Friday, November 15

The CFREB does not conduct full Board meetings in December; it is possible that extra-ordinary or ad hoc meetings of the Board will occur outside of the above dates, should the volume of applications demand such scheduling.

Expedited Chair-only review occurs on a weekly basis throughout the school year, and is not subject to the above deadlines (i.e. all minimal/no risk applications are dealt with on a first-come first-served basis).
