Professional Development Goals

One area that I have realized that is not focused on as much is the transition from high school to college.  What factors influence student persistence from the introductory courses to the upper level courses in the Biology major curriculum?  My longer term professional goal is to work with the administration at GGC (possibly as an administrator) to implement intervention strategies to provide support that narrows the gap in persistence for all students.  I envision serving as a program director in the next 5-10 years for a program to increase persistence of minority students in the sciences and to increase the numbers of students going to graduate school from GGC.

Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) is located in Gwinnett County, the second largest county in Georgia with a population of 805,321 residents according to the 2010 U.S. Census.  Gwinnett is also the most diverse county in the State where minority groups are now the majority (United States Census, 2009).  Prior to GGC’s founding in 2005, Gwinnett was the largest county east of the Mississippi without a four-year college. As a 4-year undergraduate teaching institution, GGC has grown from 118 students in fall 2006 to an expected 9,500 students in fall 2012 with over 300 full-time faculty members.  Its mission is to provide open access to baccalaureate level degrees that meet the economic development needs of the growing and diverse population of the northeast Atlanta metropolitan region; and its cornerstones are the innovative use of educational technology and a commitment to an integrated educational experience that develops the whole person.
