Post an update regarding your IRB process.

Kristine Obom: Hi all, This is Kris-- I hope you have all had a good start to the semester. I have previously completed IRB training so I do not need to do it again. I am working on my survey instrument to include in my IRB application. I will also be using formative assessments but I don't need to have those ready yet. My first PBL assignment is not until October 10th, so the IRB exemption will be definitely submitted and reviewed by then. I'll keep you posted. (1 September, 2009)

Lianna Etchberger: Since I am at a regional campus 5 ours away from the IRB office, all my work with the IRB office was done by phone and email. The woman with whom I worked was extremely helpful. I submitted my proposal just 11 working days before the first day of class. Her constructive comments helped me clarify what I was proposing to do, and made for a better written proposal. For example, she helped me clarify the difference between a "survey" and an "assessment". Just a few days before the start of the semester, my proposal was denied because the Student Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG) wasn't completed, and I hadn't justified my request for personal information (GPA, SAT scores, etc.). Since the personal information wasn't really necessary for the project at this point, and the SALG assessment won't be used until mid-term and end-of-term, I removed these items from my proposal. I received my letter of approval under exempt status the day before classes began. Whew! I will apply for an ammendment to add the SALG soon. (11 October, 2009)
