I continue to use the principles of "scientific teaching" I learned during my fellowship in my own teaching. I have also been a reviewer for the Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education for the past several years. My own institution and department have been in turmoil for the past few years, and my priority has been to attain tenure and promotion rather than work through ASM (my institution's leaders have never really cared if we instructors work through a national organization and do publishable research, or if simply we attend small regional conferences, so I found it much easier to do the latter). However, now that I have earned tenure (April 2013) I will perhaps get back involved with ASMCUE again. Our lead university has also had 10 presidents and interim presidents during the last 19 years. But our Board of Regents seems to have finally picked a president and a provost, respectively, who are serious about educational issues and who are not merely feathering their own nests, so perhaps we can actually talk about our institution's real problems (the new provost was my boss when I worked at the NMSU Biology Dept prior to coming to the community college). I highly recommend that you read the letter to the editor by Lori Isbell of Yavapai College in the June 17 & 24 issue of the New Yorker. It describes my students to a T as if I had written the letter myself.
