We got approval from the Human Subjects Ethical Review Committee back in October 2009.  Once the Winter 2010 semester started, we collected pre tests from both BIOL 449 Industrial Microbiology and BIOL 220 Intro Micro II classes in January.  At the end of march, we are to give and to collect post tests from both classes after all the filed trips.  Our abstract was accepted for the poster presentation session at the 2010 ASMCUE in San Diego.

Here are our survey and pre/post tests:

 

Brief description to the pre and post tests for each field trip 

Each students will be tested with the below set of questions which will take approximately five minutes before and after each field trip in both BIOL 210 and BIOL 449 classes.  The format of the pre and post test is that there are three of the same questions and two that are designed specifically to fit topics covered in each field trip.  Pre and post tests are the same questions. 

BIOL 449: Questions for the pre and post tests 

Field trip to Cheese Factory in Armstrong 

1)      What types of organisms do microbiologists study? 

 

2)      What roles do microorganisms play in our world? (Please describe in a few words) 

 

 

3)      What do microbiologists do? 

 

 

4)      Give examples of enzymes involved in cheese making process. 

 

5)      What factors are contributing in making good cheeses? 

 

 

Field trip to Granite Creek Winery in Tappens 

1)      What types of organisms do microbiologists study? 

 

2)      What roles do microorganisms play in our world? (Please describe in a few words) 

 

 

3)      What do microbiologists do? 

 

4)      Are malolactic fermentation and secondary fermentation the same?  If not, explain why.

Microbiology Field Trips: Are they Useful? 

 (Or: Does experiential learning impact students’ career awareness, appreciation of the microbial world, and motivation in microbiology courses?) 

As you may have noticed, your instructor, Ann Cheeptham (Office # 250-371-5891) is interested in whether field trips are a useful part of this course—and is studying this very question.  (She is being assisted in this endeavour by the also interested Nancy Flood; office #250-828-5436).  As you may also have noticed, Ann has given you very short tests before and after each field trip, and is now giving you a brief survey to get your opinion on this topic.  In addition, she will analyze the answers you give to certain questions on your final exam in an attempt to investigate the value of such trips.  In total, your participation in the study has/will have taken less than two hours.   The results of this investigation may help us decide whether to continue taking field trips (perhaps providing an argument for them, if they are useful), and/or whether to change —and improve—the trips we do take.  The results will be shared with other instructors at TRU and/or other universities in the form of either a written paper or an oral presentation.  As you know (from having read the consent form at the beginning of this semester), your involvement with this study is completely voluntary; you may refuse to participate at any time.  If you fill out this brief survey, we assume you have consented to participate in this portion of the study.  As you also know, your answers (to the questions on pre and post tests, on this survey and on your exams) are confidential; your answers will be identified by a code number and you name will not be shared with anyone.  Finally, remember that your participation (or lack of it) has no effect on your grade or standing in the course.
