Initial Implementation Plan

Fall 2008.  Genetics lab will remain essentially unchanged.  There will be labs that cover the same concepts and techniques that will be covered when the research project is implemented.  Assessment will provide a baseline.

Spring 2009.  Research project will be incorporated into the genetics lab. Assessment will be compared to baseline generated in the fall semester.

Revised Implementation Plan

Fall 2008 / Spring 2009.  Genetics lab will remain essentially unchanged.  There will be labs that cover the same concepts and techniques that will be covered when the research project is implemented.  Assessment will provide a baseline.

Fall 2009.  Research project will be incorporated into the genetics lab. Assessment will be compared to baseline generated in the fall semester.

Explanation

The need for this revision arises from low participation in the assessment in the fall of 2008.  This is due to the class being small (1 section instead of 2), and students not going online to fill out the survey.  Additionally, as I did not receive IRB approval until well into the fall semester, the survey at the "beginning" of the semester was not available until several weeks had past.  Therefore to establish a baseline of attitudes regarding genetics, the study was extended to include two semesters of surveys in the absence of a research project.  In addition to being able to administer the survey at the beginning of the semester, I will take time during the first lab to have them fill out the survey.  This should alleviate the issue of students not filling in the survey, as well as demonstrating my opinion regarding the importance of the study.

Survey

Using Student Assessment of their Learning Gains (SALG) website, I developed a tool to address students attitude and confidence regarding genetics.  A PDF version of the online survey can be found below (SALG_Survey_Barnard.pdf).  The same survey is used at the beginning and end of the semester, allowing for changes in the responses to be monitored.
