Learning Objectives:

Course Objective 2: Understand the effects of environmental conditions on microbial growth.
Learning Objectives for Course Objective 2:
(chapters 3, 4 and 5)

Students should be able to:
A. Explain how bacteria are categorized according to oxygen utilization, temperature tolerance, pH tolerance, and osmotolerance.
B. Understand how bacteria are able to resist/adapt to various environmental circumstances
C. Describe the process for culturing bacteria, understand growth characteristics and identify various types of growth media.
D. Understand how microbial growth is affected by physical and chemical factors, the environment and the host.
E. Explain each of the phases of a microbial growth curve and the state of the cells in the various phases.
F. Determine growth rates for microbes grown under different environmental conditions.
Learning Activities:
Readings – Students read assigned chapter material prior to class
Quizzes – Students take online quizzes related to the reading (before class?)
Small group projects – Students will work in small groups in class to solve problems and analyze data sets
Case studies – Students will work in small groups (outside of class?) to solve case study problems
Online writing assignments – short, low stakes weekly writing assignments related to learning objectives - This is an interesting idea, can you tell me more about what you have in mind? One idea I thought of is to have the students take turns looking for aritcles in the news (1 per week...1 per class?) that involve microbiology. Then they could write up a summary for their classmates and maybe even give a brief 2 minute presentation at the beginning of class.
Designed to prepare students for the exams.
Formative Assessments:
Quizzes – students will take online quizzes related to the assigned reading
Questions missed by a large number of students will be revisited through lecture and in class discussion
Perhaps you could generate a set of practice exam questions from old exams and have them work on the questions individually, then compare their answers to each other in a group, then generate a group answer sheet that they turn in for a group grade? Since you use MC questions, you could have them write why each wrong answer is wrong, or maybe figure out how to convert a wrong answer into a correct answer.

Summative Assessments:
 Exams – Multiple choice tests
