Specific Rubric for MBioS 101 Final Writing Assignment

Course-ending, critical-thinking essay (students respond to prompts in writing a final essay as the final assignment of the course)

Objectives:

·         Reflect on what they have learned throughout the course

o   Utilize learned terminology and use it correctly

o   Demonstrate detailed knowledge about several concepts covered in course beyond knowledge they had when entering the course

§  Inventory what they knew at beginning

§  Identify gains

o   Analyze their learning experience

§  Compare to other courses

§  Compare online course to other courses

§  Gain insight into their own learning strengths and challenges

§  Improve their learning overall

o   Review integration of facts to conceptual map

§  Identify relationships in a number of areas

o   Cite several applications of knowledge during the course (such as a discussion with family or peers, change in the way they approach cleaning products, etc.)

o   Demonstrate knowledge of varied roles of microbes, from pathogens to beneficial organisms

·         Predict specifically how they will use what they have learned in the course during the decade ahead

o   Some students will have career applications, especially pre-nursing cohort

o   All students should be able to predict applications in their personal
