Teaching Challenges

 In summary, my challenge is be clear discernment of learning objectives and convey these effectively to my students. I need to create classroom activities that align with these objectives, helping students gain skills in learning as well as conceptual knowledge.  Finally, assessment of their performance in reaching these goals using proven techniques, informed by educational data, will complete this cycle. I teach many classes where these best practices can be injected at any stage.

Professional Development Goals

My professional goal is to continue to gain effectiveness as an instructor.  I continue to learn more about instruction by attending national meetings, working with colleagues locally and in self-directed study. Becoming a virtual resident will connect me with instructional mentors, connect with additional colleagues focused on growing areas of instruction and allow me to cultivate a greater group of colleagues at my home institution.  With regard to national meetings, I have attended ASM CUE sessions focused on various aspects of assessment, but have found myself poorly prepared in educational theory and in great need of additional training.  More specifically, focus on aligning educational objectives, classroom activity and assessment continues to be an attainable goal in my courses, but my practical advances require more work.  At WSU, colleagues in the sciences have shared instructional articles, providing useful discussion. However, I have yet to gain colleagues who are highly trained educators in science rather than scientists who have become educators.  My goal is to continue to cultivate passionate instructional colleagues in all disciplines who can help me gain expertise beyond my area of scientific research.  This will aid my development at the next instructional level.
