Analysis of RBC membrane proteins

This is the first of 3 lab projects in a 1 semester introductory cell and molecular lab course for pre-med majors.    

In the project students isolate RBC membrane proteins from whole mouse blood and compare protein profiles between normal mouse blood and a spherocytotic mutant.  (Mutant obtained from collaborator at Medical College of Wisconsin.)  

Current summative assessment includes an abbreviated lab report written in scientific manuscript style and MC and calculation/short answer questions on a final exam.  Formative assessment includes peer review of lab report, and in class problems sets.

At the end of this module, students will be able to:

Foundational knowledge:

•    Diagram, label and explain how SDS-PAGE separates proteins by size.

•    Compare Coomasie stained gel with a Western blot.
•    Recognize the 4 major sections of a scientific publication.

Application:
•    Interpret the results of SDS-PAGE electrophoresis.
•    Communicate the results of an experiment in a professional scientific format.

Learning how to learn:
•    Connect an experiment to the broader field of study.
